Jordan Lake and Haw River: Mockingbird Antics

When someone mentions a flycatcher, we tend to think of phoebes or swallows or even blue-grey gnatcatchers.  But, ha, the northern mockingbird is good at catching insects in flight too. Yesterday, I caught up with a mockingbird, on the wing, chasing his breakfast at the lake.

  1. You got a smile from me! What fun to watch that mockingbird—looks like you had to be moving pretty fast to keep up with it…..

  2. Sweet adventure as the Mocking Bird mocks the flycatchers, phoebes, swallows and gnatcatchers in one very not-straight flight pattern. Those others seem to catch their bugs without all the fight antics. Watched the swallows as we fished on Friday and a pair came very close in pursuit of each other or the same bugs.
