Mom osprey was set to grab the fish and bolt for her nest. The fledgling great blue heron, being very inexperienced, tried to get the fish too. A mature great blue heron would not have made the attempt. Mom osprey would not have challenged an adult great blue heron. The fish won the face-off. This time.
Jordan Lake Dam, Haw River, Tuesday, June 23, 2020. Sometimes I wonder how it is that the ospreys don’t actually just tear themselves apart in the air. Some of the abrupt twists and turns in the air that they do when they spot a fish is just incredible. Watch for it! Have a good day, take care. Be safe. Stay well.

Born this spring and fledged very recently, this great blue heron muses thoughtfully for one so young. As the first day of his first summer slides gently into night, I pray. Pray that he is there to greet many more days of fishing and nights of reflection. Peace and grace, Doc Ellen

Jordan Lake Dam and Haw River, Thursday, June 18, 2020. The lake level is at 217.30 ft. As the sun came up this morning, I could see more and more ospreys in the air fishing for breakfast for their chicks. Also, all through the video you can hear a blue grosbeak singing. Had the joy this morning of capturing the entire fishing dive of a parent osprey. Take care, be safe. Stay well!
