Jordan Lake First Nest Neighborhood. Every once in a while … and it’s been a long while at this point … since I put together a series of small little clips of an outing at Jordan Lake. All of these are from this morning. There are five different species of birds. Hope you enjoy each and every one of them.

Jordan Lake. The barn swallows and tree swallows shared the same branch this morning. Most of the birds are barn swallows – the ones with the orange tinted undersides. The birds with the brilliant white chests and chins are tree swallows. They were all working hard to make their feathers straight and clean before starting their feeding flights.
Doc Ellen’s Evening Note
Jordan Lake. Doc Ellen’s Evening Note. The tree swallow watches as the evening gathers shadows and the sun cools its heat. As the swallow contemplates heading for its roost may we settle our souls for a night of contentment and quiet peace.

Flycatcher Competition
Jordan Lake: the lake hosts several species of flycatchers. In these photos you see two of them: a Tree Swallow on the left and a Great Crested Flycatcher on the right. Both of these species are cavity-nest breeders and will compete for the same abandoned woodpecker nest cavities. Both species also compete for the same flying insects. In the first photo the great crested flycatcher has nesting materials in its beak. There was a lot of competition for who got the best cavity for their nest … ultimately they both used the same tree with their nest cavities about 90degrees and 8 feet apart.
