I was sitting at my computer yesterday, editing photos.
My cat Grayced was lying just inside the picture window.
Suddenly Grayced levitated off his cushion and I stopped breathing when this red-tailed hawk appeared within 2 feet of the window.
This is actually the second pass of the hawk as he tried for a songbird at my feeder – I didn’t have camera in hand for the first pass.
The red-tailed hawk missed the songbird. About stopped my heart. Scared my cat silly.

This juvenile red-shouldered hawk had a prize in his talon.
When he came out of the trees I thought he had a mouse.
But, no, it was a pinecone.
I have watched all sorts of immature raptors playing with sticks and pinecones.
Great way to build strength and agility for the hunt and future nest building.

It almost looked like there was some sadness in this red-tailed hawk’s eye.
I wonder what he was thinking about.

when I posted the Accipiter photos last night I left off the 3rd shot in the series……..

As you can see the crow was leaving the tree in a hurry and the hawk was hoping to strike.

The eye of a raptor gleams with its dominance of the skies.
This is an immature Accipiter, most likely a Cooper’s hawk.
It soon got tired of the crows that were pestering it.
The hawk exploded off its perch, twisting through the trees towards the noisy pests.
The crows scattered all over the small cove.
