Jordan Lake. Captain Doug and I were out yesterday cruising the lake and we could not help but notice that the ospreys have most definitely returned. We saw at least eight or nine of them. I am so glad to see these acrobatic fishing raptors back home for their breeding season.
It certainly is fun to watch a fledgling osprey catch its fish and then shake all the excess water off of its feathers. The fledglings are working hard and eating as much as they can because the migration journey to South America is not too far down the road. Some of the adult ospreys have already headed south.
Jordan Lake. This fledgling osprey and his catfish catch certainly show the glory of the morning golden hour. In photography the golden “hour” is the short moment of time just after sunrise or just before sunset when the light is infused with red and gold tones.
Jordan Lake. The rushing Haw River continues to escape the dam. The morning golden hour was fading away. This fledgling osprey caught itself a catfish. I caught the reflection of both bird and fish.

Jordan Lake. When an osprey dives into the water to catch a fish it also picks up a lot of water. Water is heavy at 8lbs/gallon. Ospreys weigh from 2-4.5lbs. To shed the excess weight the osprey does a shake: from the tip of its beak through its body and off its tail… just like a wet dog does. There are 3 video shake sequences and I hope you enjoy them all.
