Jordan Lake. Watch lower left hand corner! A pair of 3-year-old bald eagles realized an osprey, sitting across the cove, had a fish. Of course the eaglets were certain that they should have that fish. The chase was on. First clip in video is at normal speed and is followed with a very slow speed so you can actually see the osprey! What a wild chase.

TagOsprey Mid-Air Shake
Jordan Lake. When an osprey dives into the water to catch a fish it also picks up a lot of water. Water is heavy at 8lbs/gallon. Ospreys weigh from 2-4.5lbs. To shed the excess weight the osprey does a shake: from the tip of its beak through its body and off its tail… just like a wet dog does. There are 3 video shake sequences and I hope you enjoy them all.

The following critters show up as brief clips from this morning: adult chipping sparrow feeding its fledgling, immature red-headed woodpecker, blue-gray gnatcatcher, American crow, American goldfinch, pennant dragonfly, great egret and an osprey. I hope you enjoy these little pieces of my morning!
Osprey Sunrise
Jordan Lake. It is 23 minutes after sunrise. Mom Osprey has gone fishing and is returning to the nest area to feed her two fledglings. They’ve been out flying and trying to catch fish on their own but she is quite willing to help them along – especially first thing in the morning with a nutritious breakfast.

Osprey Surfing the Riprap
Jordan Lake Dam. Have you ever seen an OSPREY go big wave SURFING? This male osprey came plunging out of the sky and into the river right in front of the thundering waves of the riprap. I don’t know whose heart was beating faster: his or mine… Hope you have a moment to watch the challenge to catch a fish!
