A feeding frenzy erupted at the lake yesterday.

It was started by 4 white pelicans – yes, pelicans, you know, those warm climate birds…

that most likely for weather related reasons were at Jordan Lake.

White pelicans don’t do the spectacular fishing dives that the brown pelicans do.

Nope. The white pelicans fish cooperatively using their feet and bodies to push fish into a tight mass.

Then the pelicans feast. AND, the bald eagles saw a buffet open up on the lake.

Without hesitation…after all, they are Eagles… the bald eagles started fishing in the middle of the congregation.

So did the great blue herons, the cormorants, the gulls and the terns.

There were several fights between eagles.

For more than 45 minutes I watched, photographed and enjoyed. I hope you do too.

First Nest

This is Kate, heading out to stretch wings and fish.

Petruchio has the nest duties for the moment. He rolled eggs and settled down to incubate them.

H&G nest

Hershey is proudly on watch.

Godiva has settled in and appears to finally be incubating eggs.

My friend, sitting to my left, suddenly called out: behind you, doc.
Over my right shoulder, Hershey appeared, heading towards his nest.

1st photo: Godiva took action when an unknown male bald eagle came into her territory.

BTW, she still hasn’t laid eggs. The male is to the left.

State Ranger Steve McMurray has shared with us a photo of Lady Lake at the LL&H nest.
He took the photo yesterday through a spotting scope.
Thanks Steve for letting us know Lady Lake is bright eyed and on her nest.

Eagle Nest reports and JL Neighborhood photo:

At First Nest, Kate is keeping the eggs warm and safe.

At H&G nest Godiva hasn’t laid eggs yet and Hershey is still bringing her treats.

JL Neighborhood is a new feature I am adding;

it will have a mix of non-breeding eagles and their neighbors, large, small, bird, mammals, etc.

Hope you all will enjoy it.

The 2 year old bald eagle below was fishing at the far south end of the lake.

The very early morning light sure makes him glow!
