By Compare these Two Eaglets…

Jordan Lake. Both of these birds are 2-year-old bald eagles. They are both females. Did the chest/belly of the first eaglet seem to have a LOT of white feathers while the second youngster was mostly dark brown? Ah, the 1st bird is what we call a “white belly” and these are not seen as often as the darker colored birds. One other detail: note the color of the feet. The white belly eaglet has feet that are pale, almost beige (almost all white bellies have pale feet) while the second eaglet has the more usual yellow feet. Adults tend to have brilliant deep yellow/orange feet. Variety!!!

By Fledgling Tilt…

Jordan Lake: Bald Eagles are impressive … even when leaping away … and you get a different point of view. This fledgling glanced down, tilted and did a powerful launch from his perch.

By Upside Down

Jordan Lake. These two young bald eagles came boiling off the shoreline way to my left. You are seeing the third of the rollovers that occurred in front of me as the two bald eagles passed by. That is a four year old bald eagle that’s being really aggressive and the one that’s upside down is a three year old bald eagle. They were still tumbling and jostling for supremacy when they went screaming around the corner and out of sight.

By Noticed…

Jordan Lake, Monday, August 2, 2021. Lake level was at 216.09 ft. I was talking with one of the Rangers this morning, when this three-year-old bald eagle showed up. She glanced over at us. Didn’t see anything about us that seemed to worry her and so she turned her head away and kept right on flying. She is carrying what appears to be a very small catfish for her breakfast.

Captain Doug and I went cruising the lake in his boat, looking for the fledglings and parents.
All the nests have now fledged their chicks and so its hard to find the families.
The two fledglings at the H&G Nest of Godiva and Hershey.
One fledgling is just to the left of the nest, at nest brim height.
The other fledgling is way to the left in the photo and near the top – it is small so look carefully.
At First Nest we could see the nest was in good shape, but didn’t see the fledglings.
We rounded the corner to find Mom Kate looking at something way up high and ignoring us.
At Captain’s Nest we hit the jackpot and found the family at home.
This photo has both fledglings in it.
One up high over the nest and the other fledgling you can just see the roundness of the top of its head at the nest brim.

By Jordan Lake: We Needed a Bald Eagle!

The 3-year-old bald eagle came in from the lake.  Didn’t seem to notice me at all.  Glanced to one side and drifted towards an osprey who was hurrying to his nest.  Then the young eagle decided there were other places to explore.  He switched directions, angled upwards and joined the clouds way above me.
