WALK0744 2 eaglets on a tree b and w 2015

The immature eagles had spent the afternoon playing king-of-the-hill, so to speak, with this dead tree as the prize roost.
I finally caught two of them, against a very wintery sky, as they tried to land at the same time.
The bird to the left is a 3 year old and the eaglet to the right is a 2 year old.
Given the size disparity, I would guess the bird to the left is male and the one to the right a female; my guess!

The 3 year old eagle tried 3 times to pick up the same fish from the river.  I was attempting to photograph him and not fall in…water this time of the year is cold… So I captured what I could from my perch on the edge of the riprap.  Hope you enjoy the juvenile eagle’s efforts while getting a small taste of some of the challenges of wildlife photography!

WALK8260 2 yo 4 yo eagles 2015

the 4 year-old eagle (upper left) and the 2 year-old eagle (lower and on the right) chased each other past me in earnest pursuit

WALK7237 Sunday 3 year old 2015

this 3 year-old bald eagle has beaten some tough odds
more than half the eagles born the same year as he was have died
no wonder then for his fierce look to the lake and his next fish

WALK2925 3 yo over the nest2015

There was an intruder at the New Hope nest.
This 3 year old eagle (looks like a ratty hawk) had been circling just above the nest causing Kate (the mother) to scream.
Then the intruder dropped out of sight to reappear zooming directly across the nest about 5 feet up.
You can barely see a white sliver of Kate’s white head below the intruder and to the left at the rim of the nest.
Petruchio (the father) soon showed up and chased the 3 year old out of sight.

WALK2539 fight 2 and 4 year old 2015

here it is, Monday morning, and the eagles are arguing…
the younger of the two eagles, the one to the left, is the one who started the ruckus
by trying to grab a fish from the 4 year old, who dropped the fish during the melee
