Jordan Lake. A pair of great blue herons are trying to decide just who owns this section of shoreline. To win the game you have to stretch up taller than the other heron. A very stately dance for making a decision about fishing privileges.
Haw River
TagInquisitive American Crow
Jordan Lake. As autumn nears, the American crows tend to gather in rather large noisy flocks. This individual, however, seemed to be intent upon studying just who was sitting there on the shoreline studying him. So before the crow could decide his curiosity was satisfied and fly off, I photographed his inquisitive portrait.

Big Haul!
Jordan Lake. This fledgling osprey has only been flying about eight weeks. She managed to catch and carry a striped bass that is as long as she is. She never got more than about 2 feet above water. After resting on the log for three minutes she managed to lift the fish one more time and disappeared around the tree line from my sight.

Doc Ellen’s Natural Minute 09/14/2022
Jordan Lake. This morning we have a very quiet Haw River here at the Jordan Lake Dam. They are doing repair work on the hydroelectric unit and they’ve slowed the river way down while they do that work this morning. Enjoy the quietness of the river. Take care, be safe and get out and enjoy the cool air this morning!
Fish Crow Talk
Jordan Lake. There are two species of crows at the lake. There is the American crow and the fish crow. The easiest way to tell these two very similar species apart is to listen to them. I am certain you know the caw caw of the American crow so here is the fish crow for comparison.
Great Egret Flight
Jordan Lake. Thought I would share with you a close-up of the great egret that adorned this morning’s Natural Minute. Hope you enjoy his flight!
