By I am GOING to catch a fish

Jordan Lake. Captain Doug and I were out checking on the Bald Eagles. We came upon this two-year-old female bald eagle. She was perched way up high in a tree and not paying any attention at all to us. She took off and made a fishing run. Watch the video to see how persistent in her fishing the youngster turned out to be. Hope you enjoy!

Jordan Lake. Birds molt – lose old feathers and gain new ones. Bald eagles molt about every two years. Kate is definitely shedding feathers. 1) some of the old downy body feathers are floating below her 2) see the ragged trailing edge of her wing where flight feathers are being exchanged. I think she looks like it’s an annoying process.

By I Am Hungry

Jordan Lake. First Nest. I listened and watched as the smallest of the triplets yelled to the whole world – left and right – that he was very very hungry. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Mom Kate approaching carrying a very large fish. As she banked towards the nest I glanced back up to where the fledgling had been and it was gone. I quickly looked back at the nest to see a dust up of feathers and beaks and a lot of squalling. Somebody got the fish, I’m just not sure who.

By Victory Duet sung by Kate and Bard

Jordan Lake. First Nest Victory Duet. Bard is worried because Kate has gone to chase an intruder out of the cove and he also has a fish under his foot he needs to get to his chicks. When a bald eagle couple vanquishes an intruder they often sing a Victory Duet. Bard and Kate sing when Kate returns to the branch. These pairs often throw their heads back, pointing beak straight up and tell the heavens about the victory. Watch Kate literally shake with her song.
