the eagle caught his fish and I got the moment in the second photo
This is Petruchio, who is the mate to Kate, and he is fishing to provide her with food.
He will provide her with fish while she is patiently keeping their eggs warm and safe.
Kate began incubating her eggs on January 16, 2016.
If all goes well, the chicks should hatch about February 20.
I have been following this Jordan Lake pair of bald eagles since they built their nest in 2012.
I will continue to update their activities for you and for the Army Corps of Engineers’ eagle monitoring project.

toes flaring, talons anticipating, critical moment just before fish strike
Three-year old bald eagles and their mottled camouflage make trying to capture them with a camera difficult.
This one almost blends in with the water to the point of making my camera struggle with the focus.
She did get her fish and I got my shot.
Note the distinctive 3 year-old dark stripe through her eye.
I could sense the strong wingbeats as this eagle came into sight working for altitude as he carried the huge fish up and over the riverbank.
Having caught his fish with only his right foot,
Hershey needs to secure his grip for the flight to an eating perch.
The fish is still within his focal points as Hershey reaches to place his left foot for added grip.
Makes me a little dizzy just contemplating his bowed head, the forward flight and the downward vision…
