Jordan Lake. When an osprey dives into the water to catch a fish it also picks up a lot of water. Water is heavy at 8lbs/gallon. Ospreys weigh from 2-4.5lbs. To shed the excess weight the osprey does a shake: from the tip of its beak through its body and off its tail… just like a wet dog does. There are 3 video shake sequences and I hope you enjoy them all.
Jordan Lake Dam. These are fish crow siblings. Almost all young birds have a pink/red lining to their mouths and throats. You can definitely see this in these very dark faces. At the beginning of the video these fledglings are making their immature Fish Crow call; after the fish crow babies quit calling, you can hear an American crow calling off in the distance.
Jordan Lake Dam. Have you ever seen an OSPREY go big wave SURFING? This male osprey came plunging out of the sky and into the river right in front of the thundering waves of the riprap. I don’t know whose heart was beating faster: his or mine… Hope you have a moment to watch the challenge to catch a fish!
Jordan Lake Dam. I thought I would start off our week with some relatively cool sunshine!
Jordan Lake Dam. The female osprey exploded through the leading edge of her own water cloud that she had made as she shook off the Haw River after her dive. The fish she caught is almost a ghost.
