UPDATE – All the gates at the dam are closed.  There is no entry to the tailrace.  The only open boat ramps are at Ebenezer, New Hope Overlook, Seaforth and Robeson Creek – and those are subject to close at any moment.  So, I am working on a plan to use my archives of previously unpublished photos and minute videos at Jordan Lake for a daily sharing with each of you.  Please stay tuned as by Monday I hope to have that plan in effect – you will see the heading “Jordan Lake Neighborhood” on those postings.  In the meantime, take this spark from the sunrise at the dam and know it holds the promise that we will get through this, together.  Peace and Grace, Doc Ellen

Sitting at the riprap this morning, some of us were talking about how in a couple of weeks or so, we should see the first returning osprey of the year. Then one of my friends called out, “Doc there IS an osprey!” Oh wow! It is a female and she is too early. I don’t usually see ospreys until the last day of February and then usually the males are the first to return to an area. I am going to worry about her in the cold that is already here and that is supposed to just get more frigid over the next few days. I hope she finds a warm dry perch and that the eagles don’t harass her. Welcome back, Osprey! Stay safe.

I was cold and had decided to call it a day. As I turned toward my truck, I saw an adult bald eagle appear out of the shadows that wrapped the Haw River. The bald eagle was carrying a large fish. She was also being chased by at least 2 other eagles who wanted her fish. The eagle was moving fast. The 11 photos in the slideshow cover the 11 seconds from when I saw this bald eagle until she passed over my head and headed out over the dam.
