Jordan Lake. The brown-headed nuthatch is only about 3 to 4 inches in length. Makes it much smaller than the woodpeckers in the Jordan Lake Neighborhood. However, it certainly holds its own when it comes to drilling underneath the bark looking for bugs and spiders to eat. The occasional high pitched chittering that you hear throughout the clip is this nuthatch’s mate who is further up the tree also drilling for insects. Hope you enjoy the determination that this little bird shows.

CategoryCaptain’s Nest bald eagle chick
Jordan Lake. Captain Doug and I were out checking bald eagle nests. At Captain’s Nest we discovered Dad and his chick enjoying the warm and windy afternoon. The chick is immediately below Dad’s beak. Dad and chick are both looking to the right. Second photo has arrow pointing at chick’s eye.

Another Triplet Visits!
Jordan Lake. First Nest. Another of last year’s triplets visited its home nest! This time it was the biggest of the 3. Pine cones clustered near the young eagle’s head can make seeing the eagle a chore. In last photo Bard is flying right over the youngster after barely giving it a glance. Interesting!!!

Mom Kate Brooding
Jordan Lake. First Nest. My first glance up at the nest and I thought my goodness I’m seeing a very clear shot of Mom Kate brooding. Got my lens on the nest and realized that a spindly branch that had been obstructing my view of the nest was no longer there. I do not know if one of the parents removed that branch. Perhaps they accidentally knocked it out of the nest. Could’ve been the wind that took it out. I checked the rest of the nest and it looked just fine. So, I’m hoping this means that mayhap I will be able to get better photos of the nest and it’s occupants for us to share!

Mallard Pairs Begin Their Morning
Jordan Lake. Two pairs of mallard ducks appeared. One pair quickly settled into feeding for the morning. The other pair apparently had to get stretched out before they began their own feeding. Hope you enjoy the mallards!
First Nest Snippet 2024/02/15
Jordan Lake First Nest Neighborhood. Every once in a while … and it’s been a long while at this point … since I put together a series of small little clips of an outing at Jordan Lake. All of these are from this morning. There are five different species of birds. Hope you enjoy each and every one of them.
