Jordan Lake Dam, Haw River: Dear Momma Osprey!  Welcome back to your breeding home here at Jordan Lake.  You are always my reliable signal that Spring is just around the bend.  What a tremendous flight you have taken … more than 3000 miles from South America to North Carolina.  I am glad you had the endurance and good winds to get back here again!

Jordan Lake Dam, Haw River, Tuesday, March 2, 2021. Doc Ellen‘s Natural Minute. Or, perhaps this morning, I should say a chipping sparrow natural minute. The small sparrow was very busy looking for seeds down in the grass. You can hear the Haw River running hard down below the riprap. The lake is slowly dropping. It is at 227.51ft. Take care, be safe and most certainly stay well.

Jordan Lake Dam, Haw River: Sometimes, the 12-year-old heart of me just has to play with a photograph and find new ways to see bald eagles. Such as this 2-year-old bald eagle at the riprap this morning, in all the fog. I hope the changes let you see the concentration of the youngster as he aims for just the right branch for his landing.

Jordan Lake Neighborhood: I am a Song Sparrow. Normally I am happy and love to sing, but not today. No way. Today I am just grumpy. I am not a duck and I wish the rain would go away. I am not a penguin and I wish the cold would go away. How I long for Spring and warm sunshine so I can sing the day away. Sigh.

Jordan Lake Dam, Haw River, Friday, February 26, 2021. The lake is finally dropping some which means the Haw River is dashing hard through the dam. Lake level is at 229.74 feet. The rushing river sure brought in a whole lot of great blue herons. Matter of fact, it almost looked like it was raining great blue herons there were so many of them dashing all about. I hope you enjoy their dancing above the waters! Have a great day, take care, be safe and oh be well.

Jordan Lake Dam, Haw River, Wednesday, February 24, 2021. The lake is all all all the way up to 230.32 feet. It’s a long ways above normal at 216 feet. Glorious golden hour this morning. The water is flowing hard down towards the ocean. Take care, be safe. Stay well!
